Confederate goals of war
The South just want to be Independent from the North and be there own country. They believed that with their plan that foreign aid would happen. The plan was called King Cotton. Holding back the cotton from European Country's. But as a result the European had a surpass of cotton.

The plan for the south to win the war was to hold back the cotton from the market. They plan was called the "King Cotton" plan. They would hold the cotton and hope that European countries would help the war. They hoped that France and England. But that never happened also a result the European countries had a surpass of Cotton. So the Plan for the South failed.

Reasons soldiers joined the war
Many of the soldiers that joined the war wanted money,defend their country from splitting, and that they wanted to a adventure. Most of the Soldiers were about between the ages of 18-30. Native Americans also served the war between both sides. Also Europeans joined the war after they just arrived from Europe. In about the war about 3 million Americans fought in the war. 2 million for the Union and million for the South.

Soldier life and profile
Soldiers endured many terrible conditions on the battlefield and in the camps. The camps were often wet,muddy, and cold. Many camps were unclean due to out door toilets and weeks with out bathing. Hygiene was really poor in the civil war. Many soldiers died because of disease.

During the war the new technology was invented. The rifle, minie ball and the ironclad. The rifle that was invented could be more accurate and faster. Also the minie ball it was more lethal than any bullet at that time. An other invention was a ironclad. A warship covered with iron.

Purpose and reaction to the Emancipation Proclamation
The propose of the Emancipation Proclamation was to free slaves in Confederate territory. The reaction was enormous and millions of slaves escaped. The south was really pissed when they here this. After this the civil war was now a libertion war.

African-American contributions to the war
African Americans fought in black units. They were often the worst paid and had the worst jobs during the war. There was racism to them in the Union army.The white officers led the black units. Even though African American still fought and showed great courage during the battlefield. And they gained respect because of their bravery.

Protests against the war
During the Civil War there were protest during the war. They wanted the war to stop. The people that wanted to stop the war were called Copperheads. People were imprisoned during the war because they were criticizing the war. They were imprisoned without a trail. They also want to make peace and end the war.

Draft Riots
Violent demonstrations in New York City in July 1863 against a newly enacted conscription law. The law was seen to unfairly discriminate against the poor since anyone able to pay a fee of $300 could be exempted from the draft. Rioters converged on and destroyed the office of the Provost Marshal responsible for conscription, then turned their violence upon others including many free blacks who lived in the city. More than 100 were killed.

Economic effects of war time
Many people had economic hardships during the war. They south had food shortages and slave resistance. The prices in the south rose by 9,000 percent. In the North war production increased the industry. The inflation in the north was lower than in the south. The north passed the income tax act and money paper.

Prison Camps
Prison camps during the Civil War were horrible. The South, especially, was notorious for their camps, with Andersonville being the worst among them. If caught soldiers were to expect beating, going days without food and terrible conditions which lead to death by weather and disease. Harsh winters were to be expected.

Surrender
Gettysburg was the turning point of the war. The war ended on April 9th, 1864. For the official surrender, General Grant of the Union army and General Lee of the Confederate army met at the Appomattox Court House in Virginia. There, the two men arranged a surrender. Grant offered generous terms. After handing over their weapons, the Confederates were free to return home. After four long years, the war was over.
